Stanley Palace
A Tudor townhouse built on the ruins of a friary, linked to an earl who went to the block.
The history
Stanley Palace was built in 1591 on land that once belonged to a Dominican friary. It is one of the finest black-and-white timber buildings in Chester.
It is tied to James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, executed in Bolton in 1651 after the Civil War. Visitors report a figure in the oak-panelled rooms, a black friar, and a piano heard when no one is playing.
