A camera running in an empty room, a loud bang, and a section of banister on the floor. Nobody was there.
During a live investigation in the cellar stairwell at Mill Street Barracks — a former military stronghold in St Helens — the team heard a loud, hard bang while working in a separate room roughly thirty feet away, on the other side of a solid wall.
Going through to the stairwell to check, they found a section of the wooden banister down on the stone floor. Nobody had been in the stairwell when it happened. A camera left running in the room had captured the period before — and showed nothing approaching or disturbing the rail.
The fixings were checked. The surrounding woodwork was old, as you'd expect in a building of that age, but showed nothing consistent with a fixing that had been gradually working loose or that had been forced.
Old fixings in old military buildings fail. Sometimes without warning, especially if a rail has been quietly degrading for years in a way that isn't obvious on inspection. Nobody being in the room when it finally gave way is arguably unremarkable — if a fixing was going to fail eventually, it was always going to do so at a moment when nobody was touching it.
What keeps this one open is the combination: an all-at-once failure (not a slow give), no mechanical trigger visible on camera, nobody in or near the room, and a check of the fixings that found nothing consistent with a natural failure at that moment. There is no ordinary cause that anyone on the team could point to.
Mill Street Barracks has a mixed paranormal record — many of its reported phenomena have conventional explanations.
